Welcome!

Welcome back to Oxgangs, everyone, for the 17/18 academic year, and an especially big welcome if this is your first year at Oxgangs. Hopefully everyone’s settled, or at least settling, into the new routine.

The first Parent led activity is the AGM on the 12th September, 7 pm, in the school dining area – well, not quite…

Our first activities are on the “Meet the Teacher” night, 6th September.  We intend showing a video some parents and children have put together – please look out for it.  Also, I’ll be saying a few words, and fielding any Council related questions at the end of school’s senior management presentations.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the parent body is held by the parents, and is for the parents.  Any parent or carer of a child attending Oxgangs is welcome.  It is your opportunity to learn about our activities in support of your children, and to have your say, equally, with all other parents.

The Agenda for the AGM on the 12th is a busy one.  You can read it here, and the minutes for our last AGM here. We will present our “What we did last year” reports in the first part of the meeting.  Then we need to elect new members, and then a new committee.  Three of us: the Chair (i.e., myself), Deputy Chair and Communication group leader, have all indicated we wish to stand down to make way for new blood.

The most exciting activity going forward will be our regeneration. Currently, we’re structured using terms such as Parent Forum, Parent Council and PTA – which confuse and detract from what we all are – which is a parent community. So, we intend passing a new constitution which will bring us all within the bounds of a formal “Parent Community”.  This will be a work in progress – but the first step is to approve the revised constitution, which can be found here.  Please spare us a bit of time to look over it – it is, by nature, a bit of a dry read, but if you can stick with it, you’ll learn what we’re proposing.  You may feel this is a good initiative, or a bad one? Please bring your opinions and questions on the 6th, or otherwise let us know before the AGM on the 12th, and do come along to the AGM to vote on it!

Please do come along, even if only to hear about what’s happening – you will be welcome!  I got involved because my Dad was involved, and I understood it to mean he cared about us, what we were learning, and our experience at school.  I hope my kids will think the same –eventually!
